Segment Services Manager

Paul Tomlin started his career in Maconomy and has several areas of expertise. He has been lead consultant on large scale implementations; he is country product responsible and also manages a team of dedicated consultants.

How would you describe Maconomy as a company?
Maconomy is an enjoyable place to work, the people are all self motivators and this generates a great atmosphere when you meet up. The product is improving all the time as Maconomy develops to increase its industry competence levels and our position in the market is growing stronger year by year which makes the job more enjoyable when you are able to present solutions and references to your clients.

How would you describe the Maconomy culture?
The culture is one of the reasons why I have stayed at Maconomy for so long, while many of my friends have had 2 or 3 jobs in this period. Maconomy takes pride in trying to create a culture of communication across departments and office locations, though not always succeeding. When visiting HQ you are always able to find a willing companion to have a quick beer in the office after work. The ethos of work hard, play hard, rings true for me.

How does a typical work day look to you in your role?
As a consultant my typical day changed nearly all the time, from doing go-live support to kick off meetings for new customers. My role now is meeting existing clients for account meetings, doing Quality Assurance on projects, touching base with my team, and assisting Sales in proof of concepts demonstrations while keeping focused on the numbers we are achieving on projects, the teams utilisation and the department revenue numbers.

In what way have your role developed (since your employment with Maconomy)?
I started straight from University knowing little about the workflows within the MARCOM or Consulting industries and my knowledge of implementation methods. I have been on internal training courses to teach me the core foundation of implementations and have shadowed consultants to learn the little tricks of the trade. With this knowledge I have then been promoted to run implementations as the lead consultant and project manage them also. I am now responsible for the services delivery for all our clients within the Consulting segment in the UK, and a team of highly motivated consultants, which keeps me occupied. I am also the key contact for all UK organisations to suggest enhancements they would like to see to the product and I participate in the testing of the new releases to market.

How do you have fun in Maconomy?
Enjoy a few beers with the guys (and girls) at the office. When you visit the other offices around the world going for a bite to eat and a chat. The Christmas party is a time of joy. When the consultants are in at the same time (which is rare) there is generally a good buzz in the office with light jokes flying around.

What would your advice be to future employees in order to be a success in Maconomy?
It gets easier with time. People want to help you get up to speed, so ask! Be prepared to put in some of your own time, as you will be rewarded for your efforts in time. Smile in the face of adversity.
